What is the hair growth cycle and how does hair growth work? Under normal circumstances hair growth in each hair follicle occurs in a cycle. There are three main phases of the hair growth cycle: anagen...

What to Expect After Treatment
You’ve completed a laser hair removal treatment—congratulations, one down! You’re on your way.

After a session of laser hair removal, you can expect to see redness in the treatment area for the first few hours, as well as slight bumps, caused by swelling of the follicle, that may last for up to 3 days. Unless your skin is extra sensitive, or your treatment area is especially prominent, these should not be very noticeable side effects, so you can comfortably resume your regular daily activities.

It is also possible to experience a change in skin pigmentation—either a lightening or darkening—after a laser hair removal treatment. However, this is rare, especially for fair, untanned skin. It’s usually temporary, but if it persists for more than a couple months, consult your dermatologist.

There are a few things you can do to help yourself see the best results possible—actually, are a few things you can…not do. Be sure to avoid direct sun exposure for 1-2 weeks after treatment. Also try to avoid high energy exertion for the first 24 hours, as sweat may be able to irritate the freshly treated area. Of course, as tempting as it might be, you must abstain from plucking or waxing between treatments, and finally, don’t let yourself pick at your skin. (Nag, nag, nag…)

What Shouldn’t Happen
Some very rare, but possible, side effects of laser hair removal include inflammation, infected hair follicles, a stinging sensation, blistering, peeling, burning, pussing, or true scarring. The risk of reactions like this is higher in patients with darker skin, so be sure you discuss them with your technician before treatment. And in case, notify your doctor or technician right away if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms. They aren’t necessarily a suggestion of any medical or health problems but, such symptoms are a pretty sure sign that your laser settings need to be adjusted.

Expect Delayed Shedding
For about 2-3 weeks following a laser hair removal treatment, your hair will actually look like it’s still growing. Gasp! Visible hair after a laser treatment? No need to worry, this is just the anagen hair (the hair that was effected by the laser during treatment) falling out. The laser didn’t pluck the hair out from its root, but damaged the root itself, and inhibited future hair growth within that follicle.

So, after the treated hair is fully shed (again, usually about 2-3 weeks after treatment), you’ll enjoy a period of about 3-5 hair-free weeks. When it first starts to reappear, that means you’re back in the anagen stage of the hair growth cycle! Time to return for your next treatment.
